"Chao don't live a long time. So to make up for that, they 'reset' thier lifecycle*. And you know how chao gain traits to match what their exposed to? After she reincarnates, she might have a tail like your's or something." Knuckles explained.
(*That's how chao work. A bit like the immortal jellyfish, now that I'm typing it. I'm not sure if SEGA meant to do that or not.)
