They were a pure black stallion named Umbra. Noble replied curtly, ears pinned back.

Kaladin thought for an extended moment. "...Do you mean the flower?" He asked.

Kaden nods slightly.


Umbra are you sure, Champion asks looking a little shocked.

Yes. I am sure. Noble snorted.

Kaladin frowned in uncertianty. "Is that a good idea?"

The willowflower can cure any illness, Kaden answers.


Champion takes a breath, Remember when I told you about the horse that became a plow horse?

Yes? Noble replied, already seeing where this was going.

Kaladin glanced to the side briefly, then nodded. "Alright. I trust you. How should I give it to him, though?"

Umbra is my son, the one that I was telling you about but there's more to that story, Champion explains, Umbra was my first son and he was bright, strong, and fast. By the time Umbra was two years old he was the fastest horse at the stables. He was also the bravest and most cunning. Blue was far too young to ride a horse at that time. Sorry if I'm boring you.


I don't know you have been taught more then I have, Kaden says.

No, you aren't. Noble simply responded.

Kaladin grimmaced. "Hrm..."

Blue was far too young to ride so Luner gave Umbra to a young knight whom he thought he knew. The knight was a good match for Umbra in skill but the knight quickly showed his true colors; mean, spitful, and jelous. He kept Umbra and beat him cruely which Luner didn't find out about until years after the battle. The night of the battle was when the kingdom was under attack. I'll spare you the details but in that battle Umbra had enough of his rider's treatment and threw him a few seconds later the knight was trampled by another horse. The knight's family said that Umbra was to blame and unfit for riding and was only fit to pull plows or be sent to slaughter. Luner had no control over what happened. After the battle I haven't heard from or heard of him since until I heard about the oats and Night. Champion paces, I don't know Umbra's side of the story but that is what I know.


Prehaps oraly, Kaden suggests.

"Probably... but I'm wondering if I should give it to him just on its own or not." Kaladin thought aloud.
