Hagrid was actually in the dark forest, doing a job he was tasked to do. Steven knew this, so he used him as an excuse. Once he was sure the professor was gone, he climbed out a window and ran deep into the forest.

He saw the boy passing a tree, not knowing who he was, he thought the ferret was a weapon and yelled *expeliarmous!*
