They work until the sun begins to set. It's exhausting and painful, but every time one of them tries to stop, Bukhali reminds them about the pain they'll be in if they quit. Since Goji would presumably not enjoy having his tongue cut out, he doesn't have much of a choice but to continue.

The white lionness, whose name he learns is Ilanga, is the one who points out the sunset to them. They're not actually allowed to go home on their own, but they're allowed to stop and wait to be escorted home.
