She began to climb back up the narrow trail to the cabin. Inside, the small space was overflowing with boxes and bags. Electa started shifting them into some kind of order, glad to have something to do. All at once, she was very conscious of the fact that she and Vexin were out here alone together, sharing the same small, intimate space

He stayed close, wanting to help still. He didn't mind all to much sharing a small space with Electa. It wasn't as bad as it would have felt at first. She wasn't Gun girl to him anymore, just Electa. Little, adorable, short Electa.

She had fallen silent since they'd gotten inside. After several minutes, the quiet felt like it might choke her. She cleared her throat. "I got a camping stove and some gas for us to cook with...I mean, it wont be great, but..."

He seemed curious about the topic of a camping stove, tilting his head a bit. "I'm okay with anything that works for you, and it would be cool to use a camping stove, I've not have ever before."

She nodded. "Yeah." Electa turned away, pretending to be fiddling with the camping stove. There was nothing to fiddle with; all you did was hook up the gas lead to it

He felt confused on what she was doing, he didn't understand why she had turned away but assumed he'd done something wrong or said something wrong. He looked down and tried to totally be interested in the moss again and totally not sad that she didn't seem to into a conversation.

She found herself rearranging the cardboard boxes again, so that a few that had been on the bottom were now on the top. She thought she'd give anything for some really hard, physical work right then--about ten miles on the treadmill would do it, or a hundred reps of the biceps press.

Soon he was muttering to himself as many facts as he could remember about plant life while his left hand fiddled with his bracelet yet again.

It was only about ten a.m.; they had a whole day to fill. Eager to avoid that sort of tension building again, Electa said, "Hey, do you play cards?" She dug in one of the boxes. "I bought us a deck."

He looked to her in confusion, expression saying it all. He didn't.
