I can sketch with pencil pretty well, and shade, but if I try to color it becomes a abomination XD
...of course, all I EVER make are abominations.... XD

I think that it can sometimes depend on the form of media that you are using.
Color pencils work better when you "sketch" with them, it will help to blend in the colors. They run from light to dark.
Water colors work in layers. Light to dark. You should always be sure that you thoroughly clean your brush of all paint/color before you add on a new color.
