AP can be used to unlock various account-related things, such as additional Saved Designs in the Generator, extra Party Slots, Outfit Slots in the Wardrobe, various Avatar Base Styles, etc.
There are plans to eventually add an AP Shop to the game that will have even more stuff for players to use AP on including a weekly/monthly rotation of items.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our inaugural Ask Me Anything! I think this was a pretty decent success. I hope that everyone felt their questions or concerns were sufficiently answered. Perhaps we can make this an annual thing and do it again next year. =)
