as for tips, hmm, I found that this guide to breeding, this walkthrough and (spoilers!) the sequel to the walkthrough were really helpful when I was getting back into the game.
some other tips+tricks:
>the blue @ at the bottom of someone's post, when clicked, will create a response that pings the person. being pinged means that they'll see the post, and you can also manually ping people. i often won't see responses if i'm not pinged, so it's good to keep in mind.
>the blue buttons when writing something on forums do things to your words in a [] (thing here) [/] format, and sometimes a [=](thing here)[/] format. for instance, bold, italics, and colour (b, i, and color respectively)
>look out for free giveaways and the groups, guilds, clubs and services forum, they'll often do free genetic testing and the like.
>user IDs are a thing, in some circumstances (like selling a pet to a specific player) you'll need their ID or yours. you can see user IDs on the person's profile.
>festivals are a great way to make money but don't feel pressured to do everything! 100 percenting a festival is a mighty challenge and a pain. just go for what you want.
>breeding projects are also a pain! many users do them, but don't feel obligated to do one, or feel obligated to do a themed one or a 6-vis or whatever.
>do what you want to, don't feel pressured to do something just because i mentioned it here! this is a game, your enjoyment comes first.
