The History of Navigandium
Long, long ago, the planet now known as Navigandium was nothing more than another barren planet orbiting an unremarkable star. A titanic impact changed all of this. The celestial collision flooded the surface of Navigandium with water, creating a world of scattered islands and atolls. Eventually, life flourished on Navigandium. Humans spread out across the surface of the planet discovering lush islands and mysterious lands that seemed to be waiting just for them. The humans, however, were not alone. Beneath the waves that they traversed, other sentient life formed its own society and cultures, waged its own wars and sculpted its own art, ignored by the comparatively fragile island-dwelling humans above. Known as the Awakened, the undersea beings looked like sea creatures given human form and thought. They came in infinite variety, each species echoing the form and behavior of a more mundane type of creature. From the peaceful clamfolk to the reclusive syngnathids, the expansiveness of Navigandiums oceans hid them all from the view of humans. The rare times when a member of the Awakened was spotted, filled the myths, legends and religions of those early human tribes.
Eventually, many different scattered tribes made contact with one group of Awakened or another. This sparked a technological renaissance as those tribes learned how to cultivate fish and nutritious aquatic plants. Many of the humans transferred this knowledge to landbound flora and fauna. The discovery of agriculture triggered a population explosion, necessitating an age of expansionism. The humans consolidated many disparate tribes into larger clans which would later be known as the founding nations.
