So, how do I get tokens for the Avatar shop? Do I earn them from completing something or what? are they rewards from events?

Peerless Avatar Tokens are won mainly from Forum Games. Most of the time, you need to place first and sometimes second place to get one. First, second and third place winners are usually decided by a random number generator, so your chances of winning a Forum Game is random.
You can also get them from completing all the Festival Tasks during Seasonal Festivals. They are also for sale on the Trade Broker and in the Item Marketplace occasionally. The prices usually vary from 1 mil gold to 2 mil gold.
