There was something truly enchanting about the ocean breeze, and the way that the ship would rock ever so gently with the waves. Roach closed her eyes and breathed in deeply, displaying a rare expression of bliss. The crew was hard at work, and she had taken a break from her own duties as quartermaster of Neptune's Pride to reflect on the fact that she had most certainly made a good decision in spurning the rest of the world and becoming a pirate.
Something scrambled up her body, and when she turned her head, a white rat had perched on her shoulder. "What do ye think, Bug?" she asked quietly. "Ye think I should go pick on one of the gunners?" The rat chittered, raised her nose in the air, and sniffed.
Roach chuckled and shook her head. "I s'pose I'll take that as a 'let 'em off, we had a good plunder yesterday'. Ah, well. That means I got work to do, don't it? The crew would probably appreciate their shares." Being quartermaster wasn't necessarily a glorious position on the ship, but Roach had come to appreciate it. There was a sort of power that came with it. To say that she completely disliked the power... Well, that would be lying. Roach was many things, but a liar was not one of them.

A small, dark shadow graced the clear sky. It was strange, as land-dwelling birds almost never find their way this far out to sea. A seagull, perhaps. But this was no seagull. It was a crow, plain as day, soaring overhead.
But something was off. It seemed to be lowering. Its wings flapped almost desperately, at the very least trying to steer to ever-quickening plummet toward certain death. It cawed, the call echoing off the surface of the water back up toward it. It was too late. It hit the deck of Neptune's Pride with a painstaking smack.

Roach saw the plummeting bird a few seconds before it hit the deck, though admittedly, she was a bit too confused by its presence to even think of trying to stop it or figure out why it was there. She cocked her head to the side, watching its descent to the deck, and the near-explosion of feathers that resulted from the smack. The first thought that crossed her mind was that she was not going to be the one to clean that up.
With a frown etched onto her face, she put Bug down on the side of the ship and hopped down to the main part of the deck. The crew had immediately stopped their own duties to investigate the crashed bird. "Can we eat it?" she heard one of the sailors ask.
Rolling her good eye, she hit the sailor square on the back of his head. "Does yer mind ever go anywhere but food, George?" she grumbled. She stepped closer to the bird, examining it. It wasn't often that one saw a bird so far out at sea. "Someone let Frost know. Thing's probably dead, or dying."

The crow held onto life, but only barely. It was clear it had several broken bones, and its breaths were audible.
When Roach approached, however, it gave a weak squawk and struggled to move away, flapping its wings strongly. As it did, its left wing bent close to the center. A white bone stabbed through the feathers, its edge jagged and bloody.
It fell limp in pain and stared up at Roach with wide eyes. It was almost like it was trying to decipher whether she meant well or harm. And in fact, it was.

As Roach stepped closer to get a better look at the bird, she was just barely able to hide a wince. The poor thing seemed to be pretty mangled. Roach was no expert or surgeon, but she'd put a fair wager on only some of the injuries being from the fall. Perhaps the bird got into a fight with another bird. In the middle of the ocean. Somehow.
She wrinkled her nose slightly - a habit that she had when she would think. She became aware of someone's breath on her neck and twitched uncomfortably. "Alright, get away, the lot of ya!" she growled. "'Cept ye, Smith. Might need ye." The gruff gunner nodded and stood aside with his arms folded across his chest while the others walked off, grumbling to themselves.
"It's hurt. I left my sword in my cabin. Gimme yer sword, Smith. I'll put it out of its misery," she commanded, holding her hand out towards him expectantly.

It started to struggle again, giving a chirp that almost sounded like "sword!" It rolled to standing, watching Roach closely.
Then it spoke, in a clear, feminine, human voice.
"Please don't hurt me."

When the voice, clear as day, sounded from the bird, Roach recoiled backwards. She grabbed the sword and was about to bring it down onto the bird when she registered what it had said.
Smith was frowning at her, his hand instinctively at his hip even though he had handed his sword over to her. "What in the seven seas..." he muttered under his breath.
Roach watched the dark bird carefully. She adjusted her eyepatch and then rubbed at her good eye. "What did George put in that rum earlier?" she grumbled. With a sigh, she shook her head and glanced back towards the gunner. "This don't look like a parrot to ye, Smith? Me neither. Great. Just a regular, run-o'-the-mill taking bird..."

The crow began to noticeably grow in size, bowing its head slightly at them both. Its flight feathers started to shorten, while its legs lengthened. The long claws of its talons seemed to merge together, as its beak flattened itself.
When the dark feathers had all faded, a perfectly human girl stood before them. All except the fact that her left foot was still a grey talon, and there were small patches of feathers on her cheeks.
"I'm sure this is a great introduction...! I'm sorry." She bowed at the waist. "My name is Lani."

Roach raised an eyebrow in disbelief as she watched the bird transform into what appeared to be mostly a human girl. She shook her head again and tightened her grip on her sword. The girl - Lani, she called herself - had been a bird, not two minutes ago.
"What kind of witchcraft is this?" she asked and craned her neck to get a better look at the girl without actually going closer. Of course, the deck wasn't empty, and the transformation had caught the attention of several of the pirates. They had formed a small circle around the girl, just like before, when she was a bird. "Go to yer quarters, the lot of ya!" she shouted at the crew.
"You don't have the authority to order us away, Roach," one of them tried to say.
She pressed the tip of Smith's sword against his throat and cast him a dangerous look. "Don't I?" she growled. The sailor swallowed visibly and nodded. The crew followed her orders, funneling below deck. Even Smith went away, leaving Roach with the girl.
