Uh, that depends on the pet and what you mean by customize. You can change colors pretty easily but that can be expensive. In certain circumstances you can also add genes but that is also typically expensive.
A lot of the site is focused on breeding. Many players will take pets with genes that they want and breed them together in order to get the pet they really want.
