twice now my turn log (in the lost grove) has said Ive gotten avatar items but they haven't shown in my inventory. Am I missing something?

Probably they're the LG avatar stuffs that aren't 'items' but designs- you can find them in the Avatar section in the Blacksmith for crafting.
