How can you tell if something has a Carried Trait?

The easiest way is to test the pet with a Test Kit. You can buy an unlimited one from the diamond store.
If it's a bred pet then their parents can give you clues as to what they hold but you'll need to understand genetics for that. There are a couple of guides around that'll teach you how.

Breeding
That one teaches about breeding, obviously. The site uses basic Mendelian Genetics (dominant/recessive traits) so it's pretty easy to google about too if you need more information. Here are some others that may also be interesting
