Yesterday, I kept finding egglings every 10 clicks on the "examine area" button. Today, they are much more rare. I was wondering why this was so.

Some zones have more eggs than others. More likely, though, is that you were simply very lucky yesterday.

Probably. I gained a lot of egglings!
