I read something saying that if you nurture a lot of eggs/hatchlings of the same species, you can get an essence of that species. Did I read that right? How many animals would you have to nurture?

Yes, you can get essences from a particular species by nurturing pets of that species, but it's just random chance. You could nurture 3 Nephinis and get an essence, or you could nurture 300 and get no essences at all.

You get a regular/enhanced (super rarely) essence of the species you nurtured when it dropped. If you're lucky, you'll only have done a couple hundred. If really unlucky, it can be 1000++.
