Before choosing the traits, i usualy think of what i want the designe to look like and work my way toward my goal. It can be a sound, an object, literaly anything that inspire you.

By exemple if you are trying to make a fire looking sylesti you will nead some specific coloration that blend them in a coresponding way to what you want it to look like. It's mostly at this point where you decide if you are using restricted traits or not.

Once you got your idea try different gene, don't be affraid to change the color patern if nead be.

note : the name of a trait is just a name, sometime even if it sound out of place some traits can look amazing togedther

When you are satisfied with the gene(s) coloring, you can go ahed and do the same with the mutation. Unless you want to make your project around one specific trait it is easyer to add mutation once you are over with the gene. This way if you are unsure of witch trait to use in one slot the mutation will help you in this decision.

I hope it can help you a bit with your project, then again it's mostly how i plan my own project there is no wrong way to make a designe. ^-^
