What do the colors on the stable slots mean? Like, what is yellow, what is magenta, what is green, etc.? Is it the age of the critter in that slot, or what?

There are quite a few different colors, but they all have different meanings. I'll list you a few at least:
Blue: On a mission
Pink: Recovering from breeding
Green: Normal
Purple: Unspent level up points
Gold/Orange: Up for Breeding
Yellow: Up for sale
Red: Unconscious
Dark Orange: Starving
Grey: In your party
If you hover over that spot on the stable it'll tell you about that pets condition though, so it might help you figure out what they mean as well.
