I keep finding Design items when I defeat things in the lost grove but then don't know where they go! They aren't in my wardrobe or inventory, and they aren't listed under player materials in the barracks. I thought they were avatar items, but not sure if I have to gather the whole outfit first?

What you're finding are the designs. You then have to go and craft them through a building in the Lost Grove barracks.
