So after figuring out What proficiency to use, each attack as a star under it, then 6 more, as though upgrading. Is there a way to do this, or is this no longer possible?

On the contrary to being 'no longer possible', ranking up attacks has only just become possible- the only location where you can gain attack exp is in the newly released Lost Grove.
