I'm a bit lazy, and don't want to nurture over 700 eggs/hatchings just so I can get the scale item I want, since it's not in the broker. Other than events and obviously nurturing, is there another way to get scales?

sorry, but at this point in time, no.
Pretty much it's just Nurturing (and the Advent Calendar during December.)
