How do you get more AP? Mine increases a little every day, and I'm not sure what is increasing it.

All sorts of things- fighting opponents (as long as they aren't too far below the level of the pets you're fighting with), breeding pets, nurturing ten egglings/hatchlings, progressing plot, etc.
