AP is Advancement points, and you get them by battling. Say, you were battling a three star opponent. When you defeat it, you get three AP. You can only get AP by battling enemies i think, 20 levels or less from your current level. So if you're level 30, you can't get AP from level 9 or below enemies. AP is currently only used to get items in the wardrobe and if you have 10k AP, you can hire a stablehand.

You get advancement points by basically playing the game. Besides battling, things like breeding and nurturing also give points. Not too sure the exact rate though.
