so i bought an essence and got this- "You purchased [Lupora Essence] x1 for 5 Completed Snowmen!" but when i checked the generator it wasn't there.... what happened?

The essences bought by Snowmen are for Frost Sylesti Sculpting, they aren't normal essences.

As Magyak101 said, what you bought was not a generator essence but a frost essence.
If you check Section 6 (Non-Generator Essences) in this guide we cover it a bit.
What you bought can be used in the Sylesti Ice Sculpting when you have the right items to make a Dire Frost Lupora (which has this colour scheme:
)
