I received an experience orb recently for level 35,I used it on a pet and he only became lvl 20. What should I do?

Orbs only add set amounts of experience.

So a Lvl 35 orb adds the equivalent amount of experience as is required to go through Level 35. It does not boost a pet to the Level of the orb.
