I had 11k+ gold, and then suddenly 1k vanished! The only thing I did between when it was there and when it was gone, was take off a costume that my griffi had on. Does costume removal cost money or something?

Well, the gold disappeared after that...or maybe I'm mis-remembering it.

I believe when you do anything on the Inventory - your currencies run an update script on the page.
So if you had the page open prior and then did something - like equip/remove a costume - it then would have updated to the new values.
