i have some pets with purple genes. what does that mean?

If you mean when you're looking at Advanced Search, the purple text means they have a second trait hidden under their visible. It's creatively called a "hidden trait."
You can only tell if a pet has a hidden if it is genetically tested.
If that's not what you mean, then you'll have to be more specific ^^;;

that mean that your pet have a ressive trait, basicly they have a carry under their visual. Pets with ressessive may produce offspring that get the hiden gene in visible instead of the one the parent have.
