So if you go to your inventory you have all your stacks of items. But what if I want to extract a single item to sell? It says, 'Select while holding Shift to split Stacks to an Empty Slot' but that doesn't have any effect. I've tried on a PC laptop and a computer. Also, if anyone knows how to split from a smartphone or other touchscreen that would be helpful.

On a laptop or computer, hold shift before clicking on a stack. Then, while holding shift, click what you want to split into an empty slot. :)
There is currently no way to split stacks on a touchscreen at the time, unfortunately. ^^;

Oh I see, thank you! Didn't realize you needed to click another slot.
That is unfortunate. Oh well.

You can always ask a friend with a computer to split the stacks for you
