Pirate terms:
Areas of the Ship:
Ballast - heavy material that is placed on the hold of a ship to enhance stability.
Beam - A piece of timber perpendicular to the sides of a ship extending port and starboard from amidship. Also used to identify objects in relationship to the ship. Example: We sighted land off the starboard beam. Alternative: arm.
Bilge - (1) The lowest part inside the ship, within the hull itself, which is the first place to show signs of leakage. The bilge is often dank and musty, and considered the most filthy, dead space of a ship.
(2) Nonsense, or foolish talk.
Bilge water - Water inside the bilge that is sometimes referred to as bilge itself.
Bittacle - A box on the deck of a ship holding the ships compass.
Bow - The front of a ship.
Bulkhead - A partition or dividing wall within the hull of a ship.
Crow's nest - A small platform, sometimes enclosed, near the top of a mast, where a lookout could have a better view when watching for sails or for land.
Fo'c'sle (forecastle) - (1) The section of the upper deck of a ship located at the bow, forward of the foremast.
(2) A superstructure at the bow of a merchant ship where the crew is housed.
Futtock - The curved strips of wood that make up the underside of a ship.
Gangplank - A board or ramp used as a removable footway between a ship and a pier.
Gangway - (1) A passage along either side of a ships upper deck.
(2) A gangplank.
(3) An interjection used to clear a passage through a crowded area.
Gunwalls - The sides of the top deck which act as a railing around the deck and have openings where heavy arms or guns are positioned.
Hawsehole - A hole in a ships deck through which the anchor cable passes.
Helm - The steering wheel of a ship which controls the rudder.
Hold - A large area for storing cargo in the lower part of a ship.
Hull - The body of a ship.
Poop deck - The highest deck at the stern of a large ship, usually above the captains quarters.
Prow - The forward-most area of the ship. Alternative: bow.
Rudder - A flat piece of wood, at the stern of a ship, that dips into the water and is used for steering. The rudder is controlled at the helm.
Stern - The rear part of a ship.
Finance:
Booty - Treasure.
Bounty - Reward or payment, usually from a government, for the capture of a criminal, specifically a pirate.
Coffer - A chest in which treasure is usually kept.
Loot - Stolen goods; money.
Namecalling:
Bilge rat - (1) A rat living in the bilge of a ship. It is considered the lowliest creature by pirates, but many pirates resort to eating the animals to survive.
(2) An insulting name given by a pirate.
Bucko - A familiar term meaning friend.
Hearties - A term of familiar address and fellowship among sailors.
Knave - A servant boy or a dishonorable man. Also, a jack in a deck of cards.
Lad - A way to address a younger male.
Landlubber - A person unfamiliar with the sea or seamanship. The term doesnt derive from land lover, but rather from the root of lubber, meaning clumsy or uncoordinated. Thus, a landlubber is one who is awkward at sea for familiarity with the land. The term is used to insult the abilities of one at sea.
Lass - A way to address a younger female.
Picaroon - A scoundrel.
Rapscallion - A mischievous person; a scoundrel.
Scallywag - A villainous or mischievous person.
Phrases:
Ahoy - An interjection used to hail a ship or a person, or to attract attention.
Arr! - An exclamation.
Avast! - A command meaning stop or desist.
Aye - Yes; an affirmation.
Ho - Used to express surprise or joy, to attract attention to something sighted, or to urge onward.
Keelhaul - To punish someone by dragging them under a ship, across the keel, until near-death or death. Both pirates and the Royal Navy were fond of this practice.
Positions (Excluding captain):
Boatswain - A warrant officer or petty officer on a merchant ship who is in charge of the ships rigging, anchors, cables, and deck crew.
Coxswain - A person who usually steers a ships boat and has charge of its crew.
Hands - The crew of a ship; sailors.
Lookout - A person posted to keep watch on the horizon for other ships or signs of land.

Personality:Saskia has a rather brash personality, and tends to be feisty. She doesn't like newcomers, nor does she like landlubbers. She has a tendency to be blunt, and doesn't typically waste her time sugarcoating anything. The notion just doesn't appeal to her sense of logic. She believes in the harsh reality, and doesn't care for anything but the ship and the sea. She's aggressive, and spontaneous, and sometimes chooses to act without thinking about it beforehand. Sarcasm is her third language. Likes:She loves anything that has to do with the sea and sailing. She is rather quick to pilfer, as well. A secret pleasure of hers is staring at the stars at night. History:When Saskia was four years old, her parents took her on a cruise. On the third day of it, though, a huge storm struck and the ship was wrecked. Saskia clung to a piece of debris, and she had nearly died from hypothermia when the captain of The Windserpent found her and rescued her. She was raised on the sea, and she thrives off of the fresh air and ocean spray. She became quite close to Seraphina during their childhood, and remains so.
