I know I caught it. At the end it said I had caught the pet, but it is not showing up anywhere. It was a vibrant plumage themed one too. I have a screenshot saying that I did not defeat it because I caught it.

are you really sure you caught it? because sometimes sylestis run away after you use a trap because they're scared

You can always verify if a trap worked or not by clicking the link provided in the battle log of a caught pet. It will link directly to its new profile page.
But yes, traps can fail and the pets can run away from the battle. It will still say that your Party was victorious because all enemies were defeated. But you have to check the battle log at the bottom of what happened with the trap.
