You'll just have to search the trade broker for them. During festivals, especially because of the nurturing contests, essences tend to be cheaper. Pies should be cheaper as well, since they can sometimes be found from the "paid features", ie the haunted house for this fest.
Otherwise, the easiest way to get a specific-species essence would be to use the advanced search and nurture all the eggs/hatchling of the species you want, until you find an essence.

i suggest you to buy a puff pair and wait until the revamp, this is the best way to actualy have a base for any project with puff
