I have just added a second pet to my party. However, I can't figure out how to make her my active pet so that I can equip items to her. How do you equip items to your second pet? Any help you could provide would be much appreciated.

You don't have to make your second party pet your active pet to equip it. Do the following:
-Go to "Account" and select "Inventory" from the top menu bar.
-Once in your "Inventory", switch to "Equipment".
-When you get to your equipment tab, scroll down and select your second party pet from the drop down stable menu.
-Equip your pet
That's it~ :)
