i have heaps from nurturing other people's hatchlings/egglings and i have no idea what i need them for. are they a source of currency that i need to purchase certain things??

You can use scales to purchase items in the Scale Shop, which you can find under the "Shops" tab. ^^

There, you can purchase eggs or items like, lesser pet dyes, lesser genetic mutators, etc. :)
