You need an essence of the pet you wanna generate in your inventory first.
In the generator, at the top, you click "Click Here to Load an Essence".
Then you put in the genes/mutations/colors that you want on your pet, however many that your essence allows you (ie Regular essences only allow 2 trait points, which is only 1 visible gene/mutation or 2 carried). Then you click generate!

There are random chances of getting them from killing pets or nurturing pets. (about a 1% chance, it feels haha)
Otherwise, you can get them from broker or buy them from the diamond shop. I might be forgetting a few ways, but those are the main ways.
