I know you can buy them, but if I don't want to spend real money is there any other way I can get diamonds?

You can buy diamonds from other players in the currency exchange. The exchange rate is usually 2500g to 3000 gold per diamond. You can also possibly trade items, pets and/or even art for diamonds from other players.

They are also sometimes given out/won during events and festivals, e.g. the advent calendar
Lots of ways to end up with them :)
