Chapter 1
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
A feather slowly drifts down slipping between my fingers, just as life has. Grains of sand just add to the desert, and my soul escapes. Freedom.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I knew my brother was at the table with my mother, I didn't bother to go eat. They were whispering, about me, I knew it. Casting glances to my bedroom door, with a conspicuous mood in the room around them they continued on.My father was not here, he never was. Cut out of pictures, and hushed conversations always in the back of everyone's mind.
Divorced once, I was my mothers first child, and she had painful memories of me. A forced smile and a few short words she would utter was all I got in public. And I did the same, quiet and small right there next to her. My brother was her second husband's, he sported a pouty face most of the time that others may call cute. He was whiny and eccentric, always talking about the newest shoes and gadgets. I could tell she was annoyed by his behavior.
My hair is tangled around my shoulders, oily and knotted. I didn't care. I didn't care that I was alone, I used to. I had friends, good friends, loyal friend, only friends. Who was I? Who am I? A shaky breath and a sigh, I settle down onto my bed, the springs squeaking as I shift. My eyes flutter closed, the only place I can be free. Asleep.

I was dressed in white, it smelled of the ocean and ozone. It smelling free, wild, different. I laughed and breathed in, taking in the scent of freedom.. I roll my shoulders and stretch, instantly recoiling. A shooting pain at my shoulders, forcing panic to bubble up, I felt trapped. Frantically my eyes dart around the ceiling, looking for an exit.
Glass roofing faces upwards to the sky, desperately reaching for the skylight. Tears of frustration bubble up, trailing down my cheeks. The pain on my back reaches its climax as feathered wings unfurl, breaking the skin, blood spewing coating my new appendages. Muscles straining, my back burning like a hot iron scalding my skin. Ever so slowly rising, blood running down my back, legs, and arms lands to the floor. Gently I touch the cool glass, creating smears of blood. As I press upwards cracks start to run through the glass, pieces breaking off falling to the ground shattering to dust. Then I fall, down to the cold floors in the pool of my blood. Lifeless.

Gasping for breath, sweat running down my temples as I wake up. Musty air, creaking floors, my home. Taking deep breaths my heart slows its frantic pace. Ba-bump...Ba-bump..bump..bump.. I listen to it beat, soothing, reminding me that I am still alive. For some reason, my shoulders still ache as I stretch and get out of bed. I freeze, my hand coated with blood, warm and sticky, my sheets were saturated, the metallic scent made me cringe.
Stepping out to the hall I glance back to my clock. 3:47 am. Everyone was hopefully asleep, wincing at the thought of my mother or brother seeing me. I walk down the hall, pausing to listen for anyone who may be awake. Upon reaching the bathroom, I see that I've made a messy trail of blood. There was no point on trying to clean it up right now, my main priority is to see what was bleeding.
Hastly shutting the door I strip off my shirt and turn around, in the flickering yellow lights I see two raised bumps. Touching them hesitantly I recoil, a sharp pain going through my spine . Grasping the counter for support I take ragged breaths, collecting what sanity and willpower I have left. After I get my breath back, I went back to examining the bumps. They were breaking, tearing my skin and stretching the muscles.
Slowly a sickening ripping sound pierced the air, and my pain doubles tenfold. My skin was splitting. from my shoulder blades to the small of my back. Blood spatters on the floor, pieces of skin and membrane stick to it. Clutching the side of the sink, I bite my lip. Something twitched, warm and slimy still emerging from the wound. The pain was now cloaked with shock, blood still dripping, staining the tile floors.
I crane my neck to see what was emerged from my back, whatever they were. Coated in membranes and blood, they took the shape of wings. My head hurt, my thoughts were jumbled. Blood was coating myself and the floors, my breathing came in short erratic gasps. The membranes were drying, the pain was dulling to a sting. Looking into the mirror, my eyes widen dread spreads over my heart. My brother was in the doorway gaping at my back. I reach for him in a silent plea, to late he was already shouting to mother.
