Is there an easier way by any chance to obtain scales?

No - The only way you earn scales is by nurturing pets.

Though (if you didn't already know) it is very easy to earn scales if you go into your hatchery and click the 'help nurture sylesties' button. You can then use the drop down menu to nurture everyone's eggs and hatchlings.

If you know which response corresponds to each statement, then you can rack up a good amount of scales in an hour.
