When Krin releases a monthly avatar set, he also releases a .psd file with certain elements from the set that we can recolour (most often the helds, but wing and back items have been included in the past). You open this file in an image editing program and recolour the item how you'd like. Once you're happy with it, you save the file as a .png. Then, you message Krin with the .png and he deducts the amount of diamonds that the item would usually cost (between 200 and 300 diamonds usually), plus 100 diamonds, and sends you a copy of your custom avatar item. You can buy additional copies of your custom for 100 diamonds.
Here's an in-depth guide (with pictures) created by Flute ^.^
Enjoy!

Yes.
So, my avatar's held is a custom that I made. The original item (Fae Fire Globes) cost 200 diamonds (I think. Might have been 250 diamonds). So, to get my custom I had to pay 200 diamonds (the price of the held in the shop) plus 100 diamonds (the cost of making a custom), so the original copy of my custom cost 300 diamonds. Any extra copies I request from Krin forever after will cost 100 diamonds.
Which is why you will see people selling their customs in the Custom forum for around 110 - 150 diamonds (sometimes more). It's to help offset the price of the original creation, as well as pay for the copy that you're getting.
