I know I'm not a newbie but how do festivals work?

It's much the same as exploring any area except its for a limited time, there are new characters to meet / battle, you can find themed sylestis, etc. There's usually a few other bits a pieces as well, for example, last festival had a garden (to grow exclusive sylestis) and a variety of different contests and forum games.

This guide by Flute for the last festival might be a good starting point to give you an idea of what goes on. It's my understanding that the garden from the spring festival will be replaced with something different for this upcoming festival.
