I decided to start a little project irl. (To add to my thousands of WIPs that most have a time limit but pfft i'ma skilled procrastinator...)
I was thinking...how nice would it eb to have a little nephini to snug irl? =D So...I decided to make a lifesized plush of one <3
Originally I was going to wait until he was finished to post a thread, but decided it would be a good idea to make a thread now since I keep hitting some...snags...on the way. So i may hop in to post questions and stuff, if anyone is willing to help out it would be greatly appreciated.
The little neph is going to be lifesized according to the species description. Although, I wasn't sure if that meant nose tot ail tip, of head to toe >.> So...i made him nose to tailtip XD It is an /average/ size afterall, so if hes a tad bit big, hes just on the larger side of the species xD I'm also going to give him a wire frame, so at least his body will be bendable. (I'd also like to thank Thrackerzod for helping with the pattern =D <3)
Current Progress: Working on wings now. After that, just feert and full body sewing =D
Current struggles: Feet...feet are hard >.> Stupid feet...
(I'll also point out the level of challenge this project is for me: I've never made anything without an exact, usually found online, pattern XD This is the first time I've been doing something with a hand-drawn pattern rather than printed @-@ Also...the feet have toes....never done those before o.o Or wings, for that matter....Or anything this long >.> I've made foxes? Well, a fox and Chichuahua Chupacabra...And a bear!)
(Also kitten tried ti eat the tail off the pattern piece >< I had to give her the paper scraps to subdue her )
(kitten is now banned from my room while work is being done...)
Image Archive: A basic drawing to get an idea of their actual size. (sorry, tis a bit blurry and the drawing is really light because it was just a sketch)
Most of the pieces cut out and laid out.
Neph ear. (Not sewn in yet, just pinned because i was trying to decide if i wanted two "spikes" or three. two it is!)
First ear sewn up.
Half the head done!
Both ears attached-top view.
Both ears attached-side view.
A wing! Half finished.
Completed Wing 1 ^w^
Attached Wing
Side Face no eyelids yet.
Front face no eyelids.
Front face with eyebrows
Right face eyebrow
Left face eyebrow

Update:
I got a bunch of pieces cut out, enough that i can probably start sewing some of them together =D The only ones left are legs and hands, but those are super tiny and i'm too tired today to deal with it >.<
Tongiht i'm going to start sewing the ears....so wish me luck as those are the hardest part.
I'm also still trying to figure out what to do with the tuft at the end of the tail. I'm thinking i will strip some of the fabric from the ears and use that, just trying to figure out how to make it into a tuft rather than a bunch of fluttering fabric bits XD
EDIt:
(because didnt want to post again so soon xD)
<- is an ear XD

Update:
Finished sewing the ear! Very, very happy with how it came out ^w^
(the first ear pic was just pinned, this one is fully sewn up)
This also gives a good idea of how large the ear is, since my 3ds made a guest appearance xD
I think the ears are going to be the hardest part, so once these are done it probably wont take me too long at all for the rest of it. (Have to sew the lace on the one side, then ladder stitch the "spikes" closed.) I'm trying to decide if i want to stuff the ears or maybe give them a wire frame like the body. I'm worried they are going to be too heavy, and will just flop over without any added support...i dont think im going to be able to sew them open to the rest of the body, so i would have to stuff and then attached them to the head @-@ but if i attached wire inside, i could probably jus sew aroudn the wire when attached to the head piece, and then later attach the ear wire to the skeleton frame inside, but idk if i have enough of my wire for that...We'll see though xD

This is amazing, great work so far!
I have neither the space, sewing machines, nor patience to make somthing this amazingly large, good luck, and I hope it all works in your favour! (I sew stuff, but most things I sew are small enough to fit in a backpack/purse/hand)
I've heard that EVA foam can be used as framework for floppy things like the ears/fins on large plush. I've also heard of upholstery foam being used to support the body of large plush, but it is extremely heavy. Another thing that could be used for framework is PVC piping-not as flexible as wire, but less stab-ey. Clothshanger wire should work, just be aware that it is rather brittle, can rust depending on what metal it's made from, and can be dangerous if you don't put some sort of soft cap on the ends. (i mean soft like rubber or silicone, not stuffing)

i'm actually sewing by hand for this =3 I sew all my plushes by hand, actually. I do have a sewing machine, but i have yet to figure out how to make it work for something as thick as minky XD (It says i should be able to, but couldnt get it to work @-@ )
And as for the wire, i actually found a small spool of jewelry wire in my jewelry making stash XD (i was a free gift i got from an online shop when i bought a bunch of jump rings XD ) I determined it should be strong enough if i braid it, I'm just hoping i have enough @-@ I also think i may have found a way to sew the ears on and leave them open so they are better supported, but we'll see if it is as easy in act as it is in theory XD

Update:
Look half a head! really like how the ear ended up <3 The lace is loose, but not floppy XD There are still some pins in there, but I was able to successfully leave the spikes open (I have a pencil stuffed up the big on in the pic to stabilize it lol) which I think will be the best option ^w^Its already starting to look like a neph <3
(Please ignore the disgusting pillow in the background...its really old and is just there because otherwise there is a gigantic gap between my mattress and the frame, and it keeps stuff from falling into the void XD )

Oh my gosh! This is so cool! ^-^ I can't wait to see what it looks like when it is finished. The ears look amazing... and the material looks really soft ^-^ I wish I could make things like this... but I'm not very good at sewing by hand or using sewing machines XD

Update:
Yay finally an update!
(I work full time, and haven't had much free time as of late, so going has been slow @-@ )
Got the second ear attached =D Definitely like how it is turning out so far <3 I think it may actually look like a neph! No eyes yet (because i still need to get doll eyes for it....XD )
As of right now, the part that is dragging me down is the wings. Every time I think I've decided how to do them, I change my mind...I'm also debating between if i want to do felt for the wings, or fabric....All I know at this point, is I want to do them feathered wings style rather than your average neph wings (mostly because those seem like they would be near impossible to make look good xD ) My concerns atm with the wings are:
-If i use felt, will it lose some of the cuddle-bility? (I dont see felt as a cuddling thing tbh xD)
-Doi I want to take the extra time (that i don't have that much of tbh...) to make them super elaborate, or just go the simple MLP-style that is just a few feathers?
I also plan on making the wings stiff, so hopefully the entire thing will be pose-able. I'm still worried about length, but nothing I can do about that at this point if he does end up being on the short side....As long as I can curl him around my arm or a bedpost, I will be happy xD
I dont plan on doing much more with the body (other than attaching leg parts) until I get the wing situation figured out, since I plan on attaching them at the seam like I did with the ears. So wings are the enxt step, but once those are done there isn't much left at all ^w^
Side note: Ladder stitch is the bane of my existence, and this project uses it a ton already lol. Good thing I finally figured out how to do it on the last plush I made, as that was the first time I ever ladder stitched successfully XD
