Now, I know that what people do with pets after they are sold to them or given to them is outside the control of the previous owner but I've recently found myself perturbed after I recently started selling pets. I had a few people buy up some of my pets just to release within minutes of buying them. It's completely put me off from selling pets inexpensively but I feel like it's punishing those who can't afford more costly pets.
Is this really a common thing? People buying up a lot of pets just for the purpose of releasing them? I mean, why?

Currently there is a contest going on for Spring Fest, where pets are given out to people who release the most of a certain species, this isn't usually the case o.o'

Occasionally some people do buy cheap pets and release to control market prices. I have seen that happen to my pets before. Now it's very rampant due to the festival contest.
If you want to sell your pets cheaply to newer players and such, I'll suggest you don't put your pets on public sale, and create a forum announcing that newer players can buy your pets cheaply by posting in your thread. Otherwise, anyone who buys a public sale pet has the right to do anything they want with it, including releasing it.

There are many reasons people buy to release:
1) Market Values - too many pets of certain traits flood the market and they become less valuable
2) Alot of times people sell off cheap to make room in stables, but don't feel like releasing them...people buy off and do the job for you.
3) Releasing is not a bad thing...if it is a pet that you don't want enough to keep, and take up space...then there is a good chance others won't as well.
Think of releasing as sending them off to play in a happy meadow...
*many other reasons, just a few off the top of my head*

What sylestia currently has is a flooded market. There are users who spam breed pets and sell them very cheap. This causes pet species to become less popular.Breeders who have worked hard on a project even have to lower prices due to this to sell anything, which is bad. In order to make a pet specie 'valuable' again users release the cheap pets and leave the higher priced ones alone, settign a base line for what should be standard sale price. Its better to have nice colored pets up for higher prices rather than a lot of mudballs clogging up the server and market.Although you are tryign to be nice to users who have less money, a part of the game is to accumulate gold. If they dont work for the gold than it is thier fault they cant get a nice pet.
Admins are trying to help fix this with the contst in this festival.

Well, for starters, look here. And secondly, if you do not want your pets to be released, don't sell them in the first place. You got the gold, they got the pet. After they buy it, it belongs to them, and they are able to do what they like with that pet.

Though I do understand completely, and as I mentioned, ultimately it is the decision of the buyer to do what they like. It is disappointing though all the same when I have some high vis/carrier pets that just get released for whatever reason however legitimate (market value, personal reasons, just "doing the deed", ect.) in the buyer's eyes.
I will probably re-evaluate my pet selling set up in the future.

Some times people would breed with them and then release, as they didn't want others to be able to breed with them/no stable space.
