Prologue
You may have heard the tale of my mother and her glass slipper but you didn't really hear the end. I am Princess Coletta and this is my story.
Chapter One
I had always been a bit rambunctious for a princess. My father hadn't even compared when he was younger. On of my favorite things to do was pretend to be a commoner to see how my mother had lived. I saw the pain for some of the subjects, of course my parents had changed everything but a few places in the kingdom still needed work. I felt pity for them and spent weeks at a time going out and doing works of charity. To them I was Scarlet. I did anything I could do, which was a lot. If they needed work done but couldn't do it themselves I traded for food or a bed. If they had goods no one needed, I would buy them. Just the little things that helped them. One day I was walking and eating my apple for a snack. I passed a small farm and saw a man hammering on the barn. I walked by seeing that he had it under control. After a few minutes I came to the end of the road and finished my apple, I walked back and saw that the man was gone and his work undone. I was curious. I walked up their small trail to the house. I knock and waited a few moments. No answer. I walk around to the back to see if the man was still there. "Hello!" I yell looking around. An older woman approached me from the next bend in the house, closest to the barn. "Oh, dear. I wasn't expecting anyone." I listen and notice she seemed flustered. "I was just wondering if you needed a worker today. I work for a bed." I said looking around her toward the barn. "How can I help?" She turned to me and back toward the house. "My son has just fallen off a ladder, I told him he needed a new one but he didn't listen to me." She was starting to shake. "Perhaps I can help you take him inside?" I ask wondering if he was able to walk. "That would be wonderful!" She said obviously relieved at the offer of help. I follow her to the barn and see the man from before with his leg under the ladder. I carefully move the ladder and look him over. His foot seemed to be at a weird angle. "His ankle looks broken." The woman looked stressed. "Oh, dear! The crops needed to be brought in today. I guess I will need your help dear. Could you go to market and find a worker to do it for me?" I look up at her and smile. "Better still, I could do it and you wouldn't need to worry about paying me if I get a good meal tonight." I smile to her and she stares flabbergasted at my words. "Let's get your son inside and band his foot so that I can get to work." I smile as I lift the man up under his arms.
