Feedback is GREATLY appreciated! Whether you have criticism, spelling/grammar mistakes to point out, idea where the story should go/etc I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to here! Either post or PM me if you have the time!

Okaaay. Here we go. First off, some back story. My name is Serabee and I LOOOVE writing. And I got kind of inspired to write a Sylestia fan-fic. This board will host it. I wanna note a few important things first, though-

1. It will be written in multiple parts, with no real time frame for when it'll be finished or anything.

2. I may suddenly change previous passages, though the changes will most likely be minor and will most likely be grammar, spelling, or story corrections. I may also change names of characters partway through (with the exception of the main character and any Sylestis that actually exist on my account and have names).

3. Since Sylestia isn't very developed, I made up my own locations for the stories. I may change them as the site map expands, but I likely won't. Most of the areas are small, though, and would still fit on unmarked portions of the map.

4. Ummm.. I think that's it!

So, now I'm just gonna quickly post some info about the main characters.

This is Serabee, the main character, based off of my avatar obviously. She's a witch who uses her magic for good, though her hot temper may get the best of her at times. In addition to being a witch, she's also a mix of various species, giving her her unusual appearance. She can be wary of people but gets along very well with Sylestis. She's had magic powers since she was little and has trained to make them stronger. She occasionally has strange dreams that later come true, one of which sets her out on this adventure.

Most of this will be explained in the story, by the way, but I just want to put it here for reference!

After much debate, I decided this pet would be her main one. Raven is Serabee's loyal companion. Serabee raised her since she was just a little baby (cub? kitten? I can't decide what a baby Luffox would be) and Raven is fiercely loyal to her. Raven is very curious and playful, but can be serious when needed. She picks up on her trainer's emotions quite well and usually matches them. Though small, she can be surprisingly strong in battle. She can deliver nasty bites and scratches and the tufts on her paws can release flames that can attack the enemy. The flames are the same color as the tufts of fur they come from and her eyes.

So... I think that's all for this post! The next post will start the story, then~

The city of Venon. A busy melting pot where many races and species meet. Ruled over by a kindly king from the castle, it is a prosperous place. The forests that surround it provide it great protection from attackers, but also isolate it a bit. Still, many travelers seek the city out and can find it along the narrow roadways. In the forests outside of the city you could find a few homes, where some of the citys residents moved to seek a little bit of peace from the busy city. Though they werent in the heart of the city, they still shared the same welcoming attitude, and often helped lost travelers. Venon is the sort of place where that sort of warm attitude was common. It was certainly a wonderful place to live. And its the place where our story begins.

The city streets were as busy as ever. Merchants were peddling their wares, tourists were exploring, and thieves were taking advantage of it all. In the midst of it all was a traveler who was clearly uncomfortable amidst the crowds. She kept to herself, quickly making her way down the cobblestone roads. Her wild, pale blonde hair was barely contained by the cloth wrap that covered it. Her dark brown eyes darted around anxiously, scrutinizing every stranger with adept intuition. Her feminine frame was draped in cheap, but vibrant, lively fabrics that highlighted her generous curves. Her scarlet red lips pursed with anxiety. Her ears were long and pointed, quite elflike, though she wasnt an elf herself. A mix of many different things, she also had a tail that trailed behind her. Covered in a soft down, just a slightly different darker shade than her skin, it was dotted and tipped with golden tufts of fur. She tucked it around her as she walked, careful not to knock anything over with it. She carried a pack of supplies on her back, and a staff in her right hand. The staff was a gnarled dark wood with a few leaves sprouting along it. The top curved downward creating a hook, from which a small jack-o-lantern hung. The jack-o-lantern glowed with faint warmth. Though it didnt look like much at the moment, it seemed to radiate a powerful energy from deep within. She was quite a curious sight, though certainly not the strangest in the vast melting pot of the city. In fact, no one paid much attention to her as she headed with steely determination to her destination.

The travelers name was Serabee, and she was just as uncomfortable as she seemed. She rarely ventured into the city, living instead in the forest just outside of it. A witch, she ran a shop from the modest cabin she lived in, selling her potions and talismans. She had lived there since she was a child, raised by the original occupant. Besides the occasional visitor, she often was visited by the wild Sylestis that roamed the woods. While she was often awkward around people, she had always had a gentle touch with Sylestis and could befriend them with ease. She was particularly protective of them as well, and though she rarely used her magic, she was never afraid to unleash her wrath on anyone who tried to harm the enchanted creatures.

Faithfully at her side was a particular Sylesti, one whom she had raised from infancy, who was fiercely loyal to her. A bouncing Luffox, with jet black fur and charcoal stripes, she was a rather adorable little creature. A pair of bat-like wings were kept pressed against her back. Her eyes were a soft gold, matching the swirls on her legs, from which she could whip up furious flames to attack with if needed. She rarely did, though, as she was more playful than fierce. Still, the little bundle of darkness was not to be underestimated. She carried the same dormant power as her trainer. Her name was Raven, and she was always glued to her trainers side.

Serabees steps began to slow as she neared her destination. The castle that rose from the center of the city was a majestic sight for those not familiar with it. Serabee had seen it a few times on her rare city trips, but it never ceased to amaze her. Raven seemed equally curious, her ears were perked up as they neared the building. Serabee took a deep breath as they approached the entrance. Two guards stood outside, armed with sword and ready to protect the castle with their lives. They didnt seem to have time for distractions, so Serabee prayed they would take her seriously.

State your business, traveler. The elder of the two soldiers, a silvery hair man, announced

Ive come to seek audience with the king. Serabee replied politely, Its a very urgent matter.

The elder soldier raised an eyebrow as he looked her over. He could sense the concern brewing inside of her. After a moment he bowed politely.

Yes, of course. We will take you there now.

The younger soldier, who looked barely into his twenties, stared at his superior in disbelief.

Youre not serious, are you? You truly plan to let this complete stranger meet the king?

I do. He replied, When you have been a soldier as long as I have, Loic, you learn to sense whos telling the truth. Now come on, dont be rude to the guest.

Loic seemed reluctant, but did as he was instructed. The two soldiers opened the castle gates, motioning for Serabee to follow them inside. They closed the gate behind them to ensure the castle would be safe while they were momentarily absent. On the other side of the gates was a glorious courtyard, full of verdant greenery and delicate stonework statues and paths. A few Sylestis wandered around, most Aurleons and a Faelora or two. There was also a young girl with her hands pressed over her eyes. She appeared to be playing hide and seek. Raven showed a lot of interest in the new friends, but she didnt stray from Serabees side, knowing they had more important things to attend to. The two soldiers took Serabee and Raven into the main hall, where the throne sat. An older gentlemen dressed in finery sat atop it, Serabee figured this was the king. Shed never seen him before, of course, but it seemed a logical guess. The two soldiers kneeled politely before him, and Serabee awkwardly followed their lead.

Your highness. The older soldier greeted him, This traveler wishes to speak with you.

Of course. The King nodded, What brings you here, stranger?

Serabee opened her mouth to reply, but found no words came out. Everything she had planned to say suddenly evaporated now that she was here. She was beginning to doubt her quest all together. It seemed so stupid, all of a sudden, to think anyone here would believe a thing she had to say.

Speak up, traveler. Loic muttered under his breath

I Serabee hesitated before stubbornly pressing on, My name is Serabee.

She bowed politely, filled with a sudden, nave confidence. She looked back up, meeting the kings gaze head on.

Ive brought you some very important news. She announced, her voice raising slightly, It concerns the entire kingdom No, all of Sylestia.

She glanced back at the soldiers. While the elder was listening intently, Loic was narrowing his eyes warily.

Im afraid that events are beginning now that could alter the course of the world. She continued, Unless urgent action is taken, we are all in terrible danger.

She paused and waited for a response. The king looked at her with cautious trust. He nodded slowly in understanding.

Alright. What is this danger? He asked

We are all aware of the six elemental orbs, Im sure. Serabee said

She glanced around, seeing she was met only with blank stares. Then she realized she wasnt as sure as she was hoping. She continued.

The six elemental orbs Light, dark, earth, fire, water, and air. Theyre what allow people and Sylestis alike to tap into the elemental energy of this world. They are sacred objects, sealed in shrines all across Sylestia. These shrines were built millennia ago, in hopes of protecting the orbs. The orbs, as you can well imagine, contain great energy inside of them. The altars they sit in contain and control this energy. But if they are removed from their altars their power can be unleashed... especially if they make it into the wrong hands. If just one is removed, it can cause trouble for the surrounding area. But if ALL of them are removed

Her voice trailed off and she looked down at the ground. Raven, sensing her concern, pressed her fluffy body closer to her.

If they are all removed? The king asked

Well, I cant say for certain. Serabee explained, Its never happened before. But everyone who knows about the orbs agrees it would be catastrophic, with the potential of destroying the world. Ive come here to tell you that the orbs are in danger. We need to send someone out to protect them.

There was a moment of silence. It was eventually broken by laughter, from Loic.

Your majesty! He exclaimed, You dont honestly believe this travelers story, do you? Its ridiculous!

The king raised his hand to silent him. He narrowed his eyes thoughtfully, While I agree it is farfetched, if its true, its very concerning.

But consider the fact that she has no proof! Loic insisted

We dont know that for certain. The older soldier chided him, Perhaps she does?

He looked expectantly at her, as did the king. It was clear they wanted concrete proof of the impending disaster. Which was exactly what Serabee had feared.

I Im afraid I cant provide solid proof. She whispered, But-

But nothing! Loic snapped, Your highness, clearly this traveler is only here to cause trouble!

Im not, I swear! Serabee exclaimed in desperation, Something terrible is happening! Ive seen it, I know! Please!

What do you mean youve SEEN it? The king prodded

I I saw it in a vision. Serabee said softly, Multiple visions. Lately its been haunting me every night, I can barely sleep. I see the altars, I see the destruction. I see the world coming to an end

Serabee closed her eyes anxiously. She knew once she opened them she would see nothing but disbelief and distrust. She had hoped it wouldnt come to this. She had hoped they would blindly believe her, understanding what she said was true. But it had been in vain, and she had realized it all along. Her stomach began to churn.

Miss Serabee The king muttered gently, While I appreciate your warning, I have trouble putting so much faith in the visions of an unknown fortune teller.

Suddenly, Loic perked up. His hand drifted to his sword and a look of fury crossed his face.

A fortuneteller! Thats it! He exclaimed, Your highness, I know this girl!

Serabee looked back at him in surprise. While she didnt recognize him herself, it was entirely possible shed seen him before and forgotten his face.

Shes the daughter of that fortuneteller that lives just outside of town! Or, that alleged fortuneteller He growled, She scams travelers out of their money with promises of spells and blessings, but does absolutely nothing!

I No, thats not it! Serabee replied

Your highness, dont trust a word she says! Loic snapped, Shes nothing but the daughter of a thief!

She wasnt a thief! Serabee yelled, now beginning to get angry herself, I admit she could get distracted by material things but deep down, she wanted to help people! Besides, if you knew anything youd know she passed away three years ago.

It doesnt matter. Loic growled, Shes a thief, your highness. You should throw her out now!

He held tight to the sword sheathed at his side, beginning to draw it slightly. The elder soldier looked to the king, who shook his head wearily. Serabee, now flushed with anger, held tight to her staff, prepared to defend herself at any moment. Raven let out a low growl as she wiggled her hind end, ready to pounce on any attackers.

Thats enough! The king snapped, causing Loic to instantly sheathe his sword, This girl has done no harm, leave her be.

But you dont believe her, right? Loic pressed

As I was saying before The king continued, While I do appreciate your warning, young lady, I have trouble sending out soldiers to try and quell a threat that we have no real proof of. If youre able to find proof, rest assured I will give you my full support. But as of right now, I must respectfully ask you to leave.

Suddenly his attention shifted to one of the many pillars lining the hall.

Analise, dear, come out.

A moment later a sheepish figure stepped out from behind the pillar. Serabee immediately recognized her as the girl shed seen playing in the courtyard.

Please go play somewhere else. The king sighed, Its impolite to eavesdrop, you know.

Yes, father The girl muttered meekly

Without making any eye contact, the girl dashed out into the courtyard. The king let out a deep sigh and shook his head.

I must apologize, my youngest can be a rather spritely girl. He explained, Now, if there is nothing else, I will have my men escort you out.

Serabee wanted to argue more, but she could see it was fruitless. She reluctantly followed the two soldiers out into through courtyard and back into the city streets. Raven trotted behind her, trying to catch her gaze, wondering if they were truly giving up. While she didnt understand the English language entirely, she could sense the basic situation from her trainer. Serabee left the two soldiers guarding the gate once more, sulking off. She wasnt sure what to do now. She could always try to track down the orbs herself, but she had no idea where to even begin. She sat down on a bench to consider her options. Raven sat hopped on the bench beside her, lying her head on her masters lap.

Excuse me?

Serabee was suddenly startled out of her sulking by a small voice. She turned to see, to her surprise, the princess she had seen in the castle. She was most certainly the same girl, a dainty little thing that appeared to be around eight or nine years old. Dressed in golds and blues, with a matching tiara that topped her curly brown hair. Her freckled face was wrinkled with concern as her deep teal eyes met with Serabees.

Youre the traveler who just left, right? She asked

I guess I am. Serabee replied, Why?

Im princess Analise. The girl curtsied politely before continuing, as if it was some rehearsed ritual that had become second nature, I heard what you told my dad. And I wanted to find you.

Whats wrong? Serabee asked, sensing her growing concern

I know dad didnt believe you. Analise whispered, But I do.

Both Serabee and Raven perked up. Analise came a bit closer, where she gently patted the Luffoxs head.

You said you were having dreams, and Ive been having dreams, too. She explained, I didnt know what they meant, though. But when you talked about your dreams I finally figured out what they meant!

Her eyes lit up a little as they met Serabees. Serabee looked at her with anxious anticipation.

Ive been seeing this village in my dreams, every night. At first I didnt recognize it at all, but after a few nights I remembered seeing it before. The village is called Neria, its not too far south from here, through the woods.

Neria? Serabee had lived in the woods outside of Venon all her life, but had never heard of such a place. Analise seemed to sense her doubt.

Its not a village thats talked about much. Analise explained, In fact, its almost a secret. But my daddy took me there when I was little. Theyre well-known for the wild Nephinis that live around there. Theyre so pretty!

Her eyes sparkled as the memories came back to her, she smiled brightly as she continued, Umm Anyway, I know that this seems like it has nothing to do with what you said, but in my dreams when I saw the village I saw the altar and THATS when I knew where it was! Neria has a shrine just outside of the village, and in the center is an altar, above which floats a beautiful golden, glowing ball. I think it might be one of the orbs.

Serabee brightened up. If Analise was right, Serabee had the clue she had so desperately needed. While she hadnt planned to go and try to save the orbs herself, she wasnt above giving it a try. In fact, she was determined to do so now.

Anyway I dont know if that helps you at all Analise muttered

No, no! It does! Serabee insisted, causing the little girl to brighten up

Really? Yay! Analise clapped her hands excitedly, So does that mean youre going to go there?

Yes, I think so. Serabee smiled, You said its just south of here?

Yes. Theres no path or anything that leads there, but you can tell where it is if you follow the trees with the mossy stumps. Analise explained, Its not too far, but its very hard to find unless youre actually looking for it.

Good to know. Serabee got up from her seat, causing Raven to jump off of her lap, Ill leave right now!

Wait! Analise hopped in front of Serabee, I want you to know that, in case I have any more dreams, Ill let you know!

Can you travel outside the city? Serabee asked doubtfully

No, I cant. Analise replied, In fact Im not even supposed to leave the courtyard by myself But! Ill send my Sylesti!

Your Sylesti? Serabee asked

Analise flashed a bright smile. She placed her fingers in her mouth and let out a sharp whistle. Soon after the flapping of wings could be heard. Serabee looked up to see a Nytekyrie flying towards them. It landed loyally next to Analise, who hugged it excitedly. The Sylesti seemed a perfect match for the young princess. Her white feathers were tipped with crystalline golden ones, and she wore elegant, pearlescent armor with a deep blue stone in the center.

She stood regally beside the princess, it was clear the two shared a close bond. Serabee couldnt help but wonder if this was who Analise had been playing hide and seek with before.

This is Solana! Analise announced proudly, Shes my best friend! And if I ever need to tell you something, I can send her out to find you!

It seemed like a solid enough plan. Serabee was liking how things were shaping up so far. She may not have had the help of the king, but the princess had certainly helped her out. Serabee thanked Analise once more before heading out. Just as she was leaving, however, Analise called out to stop her once more.

Oh, wait! She hollered, I almost forgot! In my dreams I saw a pretty lady. She told me that I needed to tell her she was protecting her. Umm... I think maybe I was supposed to tell you that? Analise shook her head, Im not sure, but I told you either way. Good luck!

She waved goodbye before hurrying back to the palace, likely hoping she wouldnt get caught sneaking out. Serabee was confused by her words, not sure what lady would want to tell her anything, but she shrugged it off. She had more important things to attend to. She looked down at Raven and the two nodded to each other. Both were prepared to leave. Holding her staff high, and double checking that she had everything she needed in her pack, Serabee set off for the village of Neria.

Figuring the trip would be short, Serabee and Raven headed into the forest right after meeting the princess. Unfortunately it wasnt long before Serabee reached an area of the forest she was unfamiliar with. Raven stuck close to her trainer, but it was clear she was nervous. Their nervousness only increased as the sky and the forest began to darken. Still, Serabee looked carefully for the mossy-stumped trees. With Ravens help sniffing them out, she felt she was on the right path.

The forest was strangely quiet. Analise had mentioned it was well known for its abundance of Nephinis, yet Serabee had seen no Sylestis at all, let alone the fabled Nephini. The normally vivacious Raven also seemed quite tense as they travelled. Something was wrong with the forest, that much was clear. Serabee wrapped her fingers quite tightly around her staff as she walked. The tension was palpable, and it felt like someone could attack at any moment. Soon it sounded as if someone was. Both she and Raven froze as they heard rustling in the branches. Raven let out a low growl as it became clear the noise was traveling towards them. Serabee stood her ground, raising her staff slightly, as the strange creature flew out of the trees, smashing awkwardly into Raven. Raven let out a sharp yelp as she tried to regain her senses. Serabee immediately knelt beside her, and was surprised to see what had attacked them.

A Nephini? She whispered under her breath, reaching out to touch the delicate creature

She had never seen a real Nephini before, only pictures. And this Nephini was more breathtaking than any picture she had ever seen. Her pale blue scales were streaked with yellow markings, that continued onto her dark blue, oddly shaped wings. The wings were more featherlike than that of a normal Nephini, and they seemed to have a magical dust of some sort on them. Fastened to the Sylestis back was what appeared to be carefully crafted armor, fitted specifically to her. The helmet on her head contained a jewel which matched her eyes, and it glowed softly in the dark forest.

(introducing my new 3-vis Sylesti from the summer festival :D)

While Raven still seemed wary of the creature that had crashed into her, Serabee immediately cradled it in her arms. It was clear the Nephini had been attacked by someone, with what appeared to be wounds from where ropes dug into her body. She was incredibly weak, her tiny chest heaving as she struggled for air. Serabee waved her hand delicately over the creature as she used a healing spell, but it had little effect. If anything, it seemed to calm the Nephini a bit, and she became drowsy in Serabees arms. Serabee pulled a spare skirt from her bag and wrapped the Nephini up in it. Raven sniffed at the creature, her ears drooping as she realized the Sylesti was in a bad way. She let out a low, concerned chirp. Serabee nodded to Raven.

If we can get her help soon, shell be okay. Serabee reassured her, But we need to find that village fast.

Raven looked as though she understood, but just then she became distracted by some sort of scent. Perking up, she bounded off in the direction, glancing back at Serabee for her to follow. Serabee paused to fasten her staff to her back, then followed behind with the Nephini. Soon Serabee could make out the scent as well. It smelled like something baking, perhaps a pie. After following it for a little while the two arrived at the back of a building. Coming around to the front they realized it was situated in a village. Serabee reasoned it was Neria. The building they had arrived at from behind was actually an inn, and the source of the scent. Serabee pushed open the front door and walked inside. The inns lobby was remarkably quaint, and it was clear it had been just a family home at some point. Serabee didnt see anyone inside, but could tell the scent was coming from a nearby room. She popped her head in to see a rather short, squat woman checking on the oven.

Excuse me? Serabee muttered

The woman jumped as she turned around. While she was clearly startled, her expression remained warm and pleasant. Her face was perfectly round and a pair of silver-rimmed glasses topped her stubby nose. Her silvery hair was tied in tight braids on her head. Her most noticeable feature, however, were her long, sharply pointed ears. They were similar to Serabees, but longer, taller, and distinctly more pointed. Based on her long ears and short stature, Serabee assumed she was elven.

Oh, goodness! She exclaimed upon noticing Serabee, I didnt realize anyone had come in, Im so sorry.

She closed the oven back up and wiped her flour dusted hands on her apron. She turned to greet Serabee properly.

But welcome to the Nerian Inn! She bowed politely, My name is Juniper, Im the owner of this place. I must say, we hardly ever receive travelers! Normally when we do its researchers or academics of the like is that what brought you here?

Not quite. Serabee shook her head, Right now Im afraid I have a problem.

She unwrapped the Nephini. Juniper walked over to see the creature was sleeping soundly, though clearly hurt. She placed her hand over her mouth as she let out a sharp, startled gasp.

My goodness! Poor baby She frowned, What happened to her?

I have no idea. Serabee explained, Raven and I found her in the forest on our way here.

Raven let out a yip from beside Serabees foot, where shed been sitting quietly. Junipers eyes seemed to show some cheer when she spotted the adorable Sylesti, but she was still clearly too concerned to greet her.

I see. Juniper nodded curtly, Well, well make sure she gets rested up and healthy here, miss ah

Serabee.

Miss Serabee. Juniper smiled, Here, follow me.

She walked through a door in the back of the kitchen which led outside. Serabee and Raven followed close behind. Outside was a small barn that appeared to be unused. Juniper took them inside, where she moved some fabric and straw around in the corner until she made a satisfactory bed.

She can rest here. Juniper exclaimed, We dont really use this barn anymore, but I suppose its perfect for a situation like this! It will be nice and quiet and comfortable.

Serabee set the Nephini in the nest Juniper had made. As she set her down, the Nephini opened her eyes again. At first they were filled with panic, but they seemed to soften when they saw Serabees gentle expression. The Nephini tried to move in her bed, but yelped in pain. Raven, who was standing beside the bed, nudged her with her nose. It was as if she was trying to tell the Nephini to stop and rest. Serabee gently patted the Nephinis head to calm her, and it seemed to help some. When Serabee stood up she saw Juniper had already left and come back in with a bowl of water and some food. She knelt beside the bed and used a wet rag to gently wipe the dirt of the Nephini. She took particular notice of the Nephinis armor.

This isnt a normal Nephini. She told Serabee

What do you mean?

I mean, do you see her armor? Juniper glanced back to Serabee, who nodded, This armor is not a common sight on Nephinis. In fact, its really restricted to the Nephinis who guard the temple of light.

Serabee perked up when she heard about the temple. A place like that would seem like a logical place to keep a sacred item like the light orb. Still, as urgent as her quest was, at the moment the Nephini took precedence.

The temple is a good ways from here, she travelled quite far to get here. Juniper frowned, I can only assume she was fleeing from someone or something.

But shes safe here. Serabee said, her voice a bit uncertain

Oh, yes. Juniper replied, The village is perfectly safe, no need to worry!

She flashed Serabee a smile, but she seemed to be doubting her own words. Just then Serabee heard a door slam nearby, followed by footsteps.

Auntie Juniper, Im back!

The voice was high and feminine and, sure enough, a girl soon popped her head into the barn. She looked much different from Juniper. She lacked the long ears and short stature of elves, in fact she was rather tall and slender. Still, it was clear she was young, probably in her early teens. She was dressed as simply as Juniper, with overalls and a large, floppy hat. Her red hair was tied tightly into pigtails and her tan skin was covered in a thin layer of dust, though soft freckles did show through. Her eyes first went to Juniper, then moved suspiciously towards Serabee. She narrowed them in confusion.

Whats going on? She asked Juniper

Oh, Chastity, dear Juniper frowned, Its nothing, really. Just go up to your room, Ill bring you some pie when its done.

Chastity didnt listen. She raced into the barn.

A Nephini! She exclaimed, Its hurt, what happened? Is it alright?

Dont worry, shell be fine. Juniper exclaimed, Really, dont worry about it dear

Ignoring Junipers advice, Chastity knelt beside the Nephini and examined her. Her face twisted in horror when she noticed the rope marks on the Sylestis body. Chastity then jumped to her feet and turned back to Serabee, her eyes wide with anger. Before Serabee could react she shoved her into the barn wall, causing the whole building to shake. Chastitys emerald eyes flashed with anger.

What did you do to her? She demanded, getting closer to Serabee, as if she was prepared to strike again

Chastity, stop it! Juniper insisted, This traveler didnt hurt the Nephini. In fact, Serabee is the one who brought her here to get help.

So what? Chastity demanded, How do we know shes not a poacher?

Stop being ridiculous, Chastity! Juniper said sternly, Now, PLEASE go to your room.

Chastity opened her mouth to object, but was met with a stern gaze from Juniper. She begrudgingly clamped her mouth shut and stomped out of the room. Juniper sighed.

Im so sorry about that. She explained to Serabee, Chastity is a sweet girl, but she tends to get carried away by her emotions

Its fine, I understand. Serabee replied, recognizing some of her own passion in the girl

Juniper turned back to the Nephini to see she was asleep again. Juniper tucked her gently into her blankets.

She can sleep here for the night. She told Serabee, But let me take you to a room where you can stay.

Serabee nodded in agreement and Juniper led her and Raven out of the barn. She took her back to the inn and to a second story where there was a wall of doors. Pulling a key from her pocket, Juniper opened the last one. Behind the door was a quaint bedroom. Juniper stepped inside and turned back to Serabee.

It isnt much, but I hope it will suffice?

Yes, of course. Serabee smiled graciously

Good. Well, make yourself comfortable. In the morning Ill be making breakfast in the kitchen, and youre very welcome to join us! Juniper paused, Im sure Chastity will be better behaved in the morning.

She bowed politely before leaving Serabee and Raven. Serabee removed her staff from her back and leaned it against the wall. She set her pack on the white wood floor and pulled a nightgown from it. She quickly changed, tossing her day clothes onto the floor where Raven quickly sat on them. It was quite late, and Serabee was ready for bed, but not before opening the window to cool off the room. With a cool breeze wafting through the room, Serabee settled into bed for the night, struggling to sleep through her concern for the Nephini.

Serabee awoke the next morning after a tumultuous night. She hadnt slept well, her mind was racing with thoughts of the Nephini, as well as the mission that brought her this far in the first place. When she woke up she found Raven curled up in bed beside her, leaving black fur all over the comforter. She shook Raven awake, which was met with a chirp of protest. She still got out of bed when Serabee did, though. Too concerned to do anything else, Serabee hurried to check on the Nephini first thing.

She headed out the front door, not wanting to pass through the kitchen and chat with Juniper until she had seen the Nephini. To Serabees surprise, however, the nest in the barn was empty. Panic filled Serabee as she dug through the blankets. Raven sniffed each blanket Serabee tossed aside, burying her face under it in an attempt to aid her trainers search. Finding no sign of the Nephini, Serabee hurried back to the inn, hoping Juniper knew where the Sylesti was. Serabee found Juniper in the kitchen cooking pancakes. She smiled brightly when she saw the two travelers.

Oh, good morning, dear! She exclaimed, I hope you slept well! Breakfast should be ready soon.

Did you check on the Nephini this morning? Serabee blurted out, getting straight to the urgent issue at hand

Not yet. Juniper replied casually, flipping a pancake, I wanted her to get plenty of sleep.

She looked back at Serabee and suddenly noticed the panic in her eyes. Juniper set her cooking down and turned towards her.

Why? She asked, her voice anxious, Is something wrong with her?

I wouldnt know, shes not in the barn. Serabee explained, I searched the entire thing, there was no sign of her. I was hoping maybe you had moved her

I most certainly havent! Juniper exclaimed

Juniper raced past Serabee and into the barn. Raven tugged at Serabees skirt, looking at her with worried eyes. Serabee patted her head before following Juniper.

I dont know where she could have gone! Juniper shook her head as she dug through the blankets, But she couldnt have gotten far. We have to find her, shes still hurt.

Right. Serabee nodded curtly, Where should we start?

Juniper glanced back at her and smiled shyly, Perhaps you should change out of your nightie first?

Serabee looked down at the flimsy nightgown she was still wearing. Shed been so concerned about the Nephini it hadnt occurred to her to change.

Ill go do that. She said, Then Ill start looking upstairs, I think.

Sounds good. Ill start searching downstairs and around the barn. Juniper paused, We should really find her before Chastity wakes up

Her voice drifted off as her eyes grew dark with sadness. Serabee didnt wait around to ask about her concerns, she was too determined to find the Nephini. She hurried upstairs to change, with Raven stumbling after. Once in her room she hurried towards her bag, only to notice it move slightly. Both Raven and Serabee jumped. Cautiously, Serabee edged towards it. Suddenly a small head popped out of the bag, causing Raven to let out a startled yelp as she tumbled backward onto her plump tail. Serabee breathed a sigh of relief, however.

How in the world did you even get in there? She wondered aloud, gently touching the Nephinis head

The Nephini closed her eyes and let out a small purr as Serabee scratched her. She soon flew out of the bag, and began to flit about the room cheerfully. She seemed much better than the night before, remarkably so. Still, Serabee was immensely relieved to see the recovery. She quickly changed into her everyday clothing and made her way downstairs, with both the Nephini and Raven following her. She found Juniper in the kitchen, with Chastity beside her. Chastity whirled around at the sound of footsteps, her mouth dropping open with an accusation about the come out. Her mouth clamped back shut when she saw the Nephini, however. She clapped it open and closed a few times before she could actually speak.

What what is she doing? She asked

She was in my bag. Serabee laughed, I left the window open overnight, so I suppose she flew in at some point.

What a relief! Juniper exclaimed with a nervous laugh, Im so glad to see shes alright!

But how did she get better so fast? Chastity asked

Who knows? Juniper shrugged, But Nephinis are funny little things, they surprise you all the time.
Chastity clearly wasnt going to accept such a vague answer. She walked over to examine the Nephini herself. The Nephini happily examined her as well, and Chastity let out a shy giggle as her wings tickled her cheek.

Shes a pretty sweet little thing. Serabee smiled

With the commotion settled, Juniper finally served the pancakes she had been cooking. Serabee gave one to Raven, who happily tore it apart. The Nephini was eager to grab a few licks of syrup when she could.

Nephinis really like sweet things, dont they? Chastity remarked

They do indeed. Juniper nodded as she took another bite of her breakfast, They eat mostly fruit and nectars in the wild.

Oh! Syrup wont hurt them, though, will it? Chastity asked

No, of course not. Juniper shook her head, Im sure Nephinis even have a little in the wild at times if they find the right trees.

Chastity was completely transfixed by the Nephini. It was a graceful sight, to be sure. Serabee had never seen anything quite like it before either, but Chastity seemed especially enchanted. Serabee quietly finished her breakfast, scratching at Ravens ears as she tried to grab seconds off the table.

Youve never seen a Nephini so close, have you? Juniper asked

No, I- Serabee began to answer, but Juniper stopped her

She looked over to Chastity, who was staring at her plate sheepishly. She moved some food around with her fork.

This is the closest Ive been to one She admitted, a bit embarrassed, But Ive read all about them!

Serabee couldnt help but smile. The girl was clearly quite ambitious, if a bit hot-headed. She saw of lot of herself in Chastity.

Serabee, dear, Im afraid I havent had a chance to ask Juniper said, changing the topic, What brings you to our village? We rarely ever get visitors.

Oh! Serabee suddenly recalled her quest, feeling rather stupid for forgetting, I well, I came here to find something. Have you ever heard of the elementals orbs?

Both Chastity and Juniper looked confused.

I see Serabee sighed, Well, I have reason to believe one of them is somewhere around here. I really need to find it.

Im afraid I havent heard of it. Juniper shook her head

Me either. Chastity shrugged

But perhaps someone else may know more? Juniper paused and thought for a moment, Oh! Perhaps Rowan could be of assistance?

Rowan? Serabee inquired

Hes a traveler whos been staying in town for quite a while now. Juniper explained, Hes pitched a tent in the forest just outside town, he was very stubborn about not staying in an inn. He says he has work to do and that would distract him. Hes some sort of academic, apparently. Hes studying the surrounding forest, so I assume he might know something?

Really? Serabees eyes widened hopefully, Do you suppose hed meet with me?

Youll just have to see. Juniper chuckled, If you go west from here youll come across a small cluster of shops, head into the woods right behind him and youll find his tent.

Wait, can we really send her into the woods alone? Chastity asked

Serabee figured the Nephinis trust of her had changed Chastitys tune. She seemed suddenly concerned for Serabees well-being.

Hmm, I suppose I never thought of that Juniper frowned, Even going that far out of the village could be dangerous

How come? Serabee asked

Juniper and Chastity glanced at her, then shared a look between each other. Both then looked down at their plates uncomfortably. Finally Juniper opened her mouth to speak.

Well She said grimly, Our village is not in the best state at the moment, Im afraid. Im sure you noticed the forest seemed strange?

Serabee nodded. The Nephini, whod been fluttering in the air all this time, drearily drooped herself over Serabees shoulders. Raven let out a tiny yelp, noting her jealous disapproval.

And that Nephinis are quite rare around here now. Actually, all Sylestis are. But the Nephinis are in the most trouble Junipers eyes were dull and tragic, You know how rare Nephinis are, and with the abundance here, it seems to have attracted poachers. Theyve gathered in the forest near the temple and have been capturing the wild Nephinis to sell on the black market.

Suddenly Chastitys wariness of Serabee made more sense. She was clearly upset by the whole ordeal, but given her age likely felt helpless. Serabee understood her pain, the feeling of helplessness. It was the feeling shed had when she first had her dream, and then when the king wouldnt listen to her. She was beginning to feel it again now, but knew she had to fight through it. The Nephini nuzzled against Serabees neck, as though to reassure her.

The poachers have been driving off anyone coming near the temple or town. Juniper continued to explain, Our town gets few visitors, but those that do happen through are quite important. The town is falling apart without them, and the forest is falling apart without the Nephinis.

The forest is dying. Chastity added

Dying? Serabee asked

Chastity glanced at Juniper, than back at Serabee. She hung her head sadly.

The Nephinis are vital for the health of the forest. It used to be thought that Nephinis came to the forest because it was healthy but now were thinking its the other way around- the forest is healthy BECAUSE of the Nephinis. With fewer of them out there the forest is not nearly as vibrant as it once was.

Serabee nodded. It was a lot to take in, but she was beginning to understand things better. If nothing else, she was finding out why the forest was so lifeless. She had to wonder if the poachers intrusion had to do with the orb, if perhaps they were after more than just the Nephinis. And, more importantly, if their disturbance was linked to the disaster shed seen in her dream.

Its safe to assume your Nephini escaped from the poachers. Juniper told Serabee

Serabee glanced at the little Nephini on her shoulder. She nestled her head in Serabees hair again, letting out a little purr. Serabee agreed. She suddenly felt a new weight on her shoulders, literally and figuratively, with the responsibility of helping the Nephinis friends.

So, as you can see, it may not be the best idea to go into the woods-

Im going. Serabee insisted, cutting Juniper off

Well, it shouldnt be too hard to find Rowan, at least. Juniper commented

No, Im going to the temple. Serabee explained, Ill drive those poachers away.

No way! Chastity exclaimed in panic, There are so many of them, youll get killed!

Raven and I can defend ourselves quite well. Serabee reassured her, reaching down to pat her Luffox, I promise you, well be fine. Besides, this little girl came to me seeking help I cant let her down.

Serabee stroked the Nephini around her neck, who immediately perked up. She was clearly quite pleased with Serabees decision. Serabee quickly shoveled a few more bites of food into her mouth before getting up to leave. She took the Nephini from her shoulder, and placed it gently on the chair. Then she turned to leave, with Raven hopping after her. As she neared the kitchen doorway, however, the Nephini flew in front of her. The Nephinis eyes were bright and determined. Serabee tried to walk past her, but the Nephini stubbornly blocked her path.

I dont think youre going without her. Juniper couldnt help but chuckle

Serabee sighed. She didnt want to take the Nephini with her, not with how injured it was the day before. But it seemed like an entirely different Sylesti at this point, and shed likely be an enormous help. Serabee relented.

Alright, you can come. Serabee sighed

The Nephini chirped and twirled in the air excitedly. Raven let out a bark of protest, but was ignored. Serabee and both Sylestis left the inn, carefully recalling the directions Juniper had given her. She figured she should check in with this Rowan character first, he might have more information that could help her with the poachers. Besides, if they were as dangerous as Juniper had said, he might be in danger. As they walked, Serabee glanced at the Nephini flying beside her.

So. If youre coming with me, I should probably think of something to call you? She thought out loud

The Nephini chirped in agreement. Serabee took a moment to take in the Nephinis appearance, her bright yet strangely gentle coloring. Her antennae twinkled like stars, and her wings were dark as night. Still, her scales were pale like a cloudy sky. Serabee smiled as she thought of something.

How about Twilight? She asked

The Nephini chirped in agreement once more, doing a graceful spin in the air to show her approval. With that matter settled, Serabee, Raven, and Twilight headed out to find Rowan.
