Pinged is when someone especially notifies you of a post they made. Like I have just now.
To ping you can either click the little @ at the bottom of their post or you can click into a new post and type their name into the ping Users bar at the top. TO ping multiple people you put a comma after their name like so

Our moderators can do whole site pings, and often do so for notifications such as festivals or monthly Avatar Items.
