If it was possible to receive in a stocking in different years, then perhaps I RNG'd it twice. Otherwise the only other thing I can think of is there's a chance I opened a festival chest at some point.

Hm. I'm not sure I'd be able to easily figure out the 'how' then.

I'm pretty sure that things like Retired Avatar Item boxes automatically check for No-Trade items and, if they can award them, won't award a duplicate. I feel like I remember coding that in years ago.

But something like Stocking Stuffer, especially if they were No-Trade at one point (as far as I can remember though, they are intentionally tradeable for awhile now), there's not much I can do.

The only real option in this scenario would be to just sell the item back to the site for some Gold.
