Do the items in the avi shop change? And if so, when/how often? I keep seeing things I don't yet own in the wardrobe which have a diamond symbol on them, and when I hover over the diamond, it says "avi shop item," but I can't find them in the avi shop to actually buy them.

There are permanent avatar shop items and then there are some that were only released once. For the most part these are packs that were sold for species revamps. These packs are available again during the Black Friday sale.
