He arrives to find... just Elzay? Shes presumably still there, but what he doesnt see is Rhia, clinging to the top of the stairs via the ridges, and nearly invisible because of the shadows the stairs create.

Once hes on the verge of unconsciousness she finally lets go. She then takes out Elzays pen, which she had carried with her.
