Mmm, my US history essay was more grueling to write xD

People from all over the world were highly excited when they heard news of the new virtual pets site Sylestia. Though the concept of such games was childish and silly, many people still enjoyed the prospect of designing and cultivating virtual animals. There were hundreds of similar sites dedicated to the maintenance of pixelated creatures, but Sylestia promised something different, something entirely new; something that might have been better left untouched.

When the site opened for the first time, the people who signed up for the game didn't notice anything at first. It was only as the userbase grew and the site released more and more features that they realized exactly what made Sylestia unique. Strange creatures were appearing near people's houses, amalgamations of different animals smashed together and exploding with vibrant colors. Most of the creatures weren't much of a problem, as they were mostly about three feet high, but there were reptiles over five feet high, some of them winged, all of them fierce.

And then came the Proficiencies.

Armed with magical attacks, and strangely impervious to the attacks of most modern weapons, these invaders were becoming more than just a neighborhood nuisance. The Sylestia users were able to tame some of these magical creatures, but not all of these people had good intentions. Some individuals used their pets' powers to steal, others for revenge, and many fought for power.

Governments began collapsing as authority began to shift towards those individuals who had once just wanted to waste a few hours online and now held the fate of civilization. New organizations coalesced out of the chaos, to protect the peace and take down those users who would use their powers for evil. The largest of these named itself the Mafia: a group of like-minded people who would not stand for the abuse of this new-found power.

The secret to this group's success was its unity, its members' ability to share and accept help. They gave resources, so no one would have to steal them. They gave respect, so no one would have to fight for it. They are humanity's last hope.

The Mafia's mission? To uncover the secrets of Sylestia, why and how its creators unleashed their coding upon the world, to keep as many people alive and safe as possible, and to catch and breed lots of pretty animals.

Preferably the zolnixis.

It makes the Mafia sound dignified, contrasting the regular connotation the word 'mafia' tends to hand. o:
