She hugs her for a solid minute then lets go.

"Thanks. I needed that."

She smiles up at her.

She nods.

For the rest of the day, Jack acted like he couldn't stand the sight of Victoria. She tried asking people questions about the wheezers, but they just sent back one-word answers that meant nothing.

Umpteen hours later, she found herself standing alone in the yard. She didn't realize how much she had come to depend on Jack. Without him by her side, she felt utterly vulnerable. She saw him make his way up the stairs to his cell without a backward glance but she didn't try to chase him. Instead, she picked an empty table toward the back of the yard and cursed herself for not just curling up in bed last night and ignoring the blood watch like everybody else.
