Ahh, have you tried coloring dialog? Some people do that to define it better.
As for the tense, let me show you an example-
''You should get that checked out!'' Shula said, while walking up and down the isle.
See how the said is past tense, but walking is present? The story itself is still present-tense (is that a word? XD) but it's grammar is correct.

I didn't need an example. I know how to write in past tense, but I just prefer to write in present. There's quite a few books out there that are in present tense too. (ex. The Young Elite series, Divergent trilogy) And for the coloring, I'll try it sometime when I have time.
